Introduction

Artificial Intelligence is transforming energy by helping predict demand, integrate renewables, prevent blackouts, and improve efficiency. To scale these benefits, the EU launched AI-EFFECT, a three-year Horizon Europe project to test and validate AI solutions for energy.

What is AI-EFFECT?

This initiative brings together 19 European partners, including universities, energy operators, and tech companies, to build a European Testing and Experimentation Facility for AI in energy, develop and validate AI safely, and accelerate Europe's shift to cleaner, smarter energy systems.

How It Works

AI-EFFECT will connect Europe's labs and computing facilities through a digital platform, enabling AI model development and training, secure EU-compliant data sharing, and controlled testing before deployment.

Demonstrations Across Europe

The project will run four large-scale demonstrations, each focusing on a different energy challenge:

  • Denmark: multi-energy and sector coupling.
  • Netherlands: transmission congestion management.
  • Portugal: energy efficiency and local energy communities.
  • Germany: integration of distributed energy resources into distribution networks.

Each node will showcase how AI can solve real-world problems and support Europe's energy transition.

Why It Matters

AI can forecast renewable output, improve grid reliability, cut energy use, and enable smart EV charging, making Europe's energy systems greener, smarter, and more resilient.

A European Collaboration

AI-EFFECT unites partners from Ireland, Portugal, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Norway, Austria, Italy, and Spain. This international cooperation ensures that the solutions developed are scalable and can be replicated across Europe.

The project also addresses key regulatory aspects, such as alignment with the EU AI Act, ensuring AI applications are transparent, reliable, and trustworthy.

Looking Ahead

Running from October 2024 to September 2027, AI-EFFECT will establish a foundation for how Europe integrates AI into its energy systems. By connecting expertise, infrastructure, and innovation, the project positions Europe as a global leader in this critical field.

About AI-EFFECT
